Services

First steps

Beyond the community’s warm welcome, specialized services are available to help you settle in, whether you are on your own or with your family.

L’Accueil francophone, a provincial organization, is your go-to resource, assisting with everything from needs assessment to opening a bank account, finding housing, obtaining a social insurance number, and navigating government and community services. A qualified settlement officer will guide you through every step, ensuring a smooth move to the Seine River region.

Still abroad but have a residency confirmation from the Government of Canada? If so, you are eligible to use Accueil francophone’s pre-arrival services.

Schooling and early childhood

Living in French in a bilingual community

As a bilingual country, Canada offers a choice between French- and English-speaking schools.

Note, however, that enrolling your children in a French-speaking school ensures they learn both official languages, as English is also part of the curriculum. Bilingualism will be a valuable asset to your children, enhancing their future job prospects.

If you choose an English-speaking school, be prepared to communicate with staff exclusively in English.

Children typically start school in kindergarten. Accredited daycare centres are available for younger children. Since waitlists are common, it’s best to register as early as possible.

Health

Manitoba’s public health care system ensures residents receive care when and where they need it. With a valid health card, you can access public health services, including hospitals, clinics, and vaccinations—and, if you’re fortunate, a family doctor. But don’t worry—walk-in clinics provide excellent care, and their services are free.

While health care itself is free, prescription medications may not be covered unless you have private insurance or employer-provided coverage.

Language training

The importance of learning or improving your English should not be underestimated. As a permanent resident, French will be a major asset, but many employers require fluency in English.

French and/or English courses for newcomers are free of charge. You’ll study at your own level, with progress assessed and recognized. Contact your settlement officer for more information.

Did you know? Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) invests heavily in language training for permanent residents to help them secure jobs that match their qualifications.

To access these services, you’ll need to take tests to assess your language proficiency.

If you’ve chosen the Seine River region “Welcoming Francophone Community,” you may be eligible for online English courses. Contact your settlement officer for more details.

Volunteerism, a Canadian value

Volunteering is a great way to connect with your community, expand your network, give back, and gain appreciation.

Both the Seine River region and Winnipeg offer many volunteer opportunities.

Be sure to include your volunteer experience on your résumé— it will be valued by employers.

Did you know? In 2018, over 24 million Canadians contributed approximately 5 billion hours to volunteer activities.

Cultural and sporting activities

Whether free or paid, the Seine River region offers ample opportunities to enjoy your favourite sport at a community centre, gym or outdoors.

Skating and cross-country skiing are easy to learn and will help you embrace the Canadian winter.
